Cell phones will be the most ubiquitous digital learning device open to today’s students and while I’ve provided several ideas for using cell phones to enrich teaching and learning I have not shared actual lessons. This is actually the first of what I hope will become a series of lessons to provide educators with ideas for using cell phones in education. This lesson can be implemented at school if you are teaching within an environment that allows students to use personal learning devices, or beyond school if students are prohibited from using digital devices. Use Google Text message for students studying areas around the global world.

Local: Get business listings, get into what you would like to find you need to include a populous city and state, or zip (ex: pizza 10013, Blockbuster boston ma). Brainstorm with your course which kind of things would be interesting to research in your community. They’ll do that using the Google SMS similuator which really is a terrific tool since it allows the instructor to task from his/her laptop and model how to get this done work. Students will be asked to research another grouped community using Google SMS where they explore these same characteristics.

Which community they explore, will, of course, be influenced by the teacher’s curricular focus. It could be that they are studying the grouped community where their ancestors originated from, or various towns in a particular state or country of research perhaps. A map of the region could be posted on the bulletinboard with each report pinned (in a format that gets unfolded) onto every part of the map. Post its could be positioned on the table so others could touch upon each statement.

All projects could be posted on the Wikispaces web page that celebrated the topic being analyzed. The discussion tab could be used on each page with a thought provoking question to visitors and readers could use the tabs for questions they might have. Students could record their report utilizing a Voki and all the Voki’s could be submitted on a site (ie wiki or website).

Students could use the comment feature on Voki to comment one to the other in what they heard. Text message your search query to 466453 (‘GOOGLE’ of all devices). Google will text message results. The demo enables one to view the results of a query on the telephone image which shows how it would look on your own mobile device.

Digital Citizenship – Students understand human being, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and moral behavior.

Explanation of the way the use of mobile phones enriches this lesson. The integration of cell phones into this lesson provides students with resources and the versatility to find information that’s not easily available in classrooms without technology. The use of this tool enables students to research, explore, compare, and comparison a variety of different topics in a populous city of interest on demand. This provides at student fingertips, access to information that is not available in classrooms enabling them to compare, contrast, and make new meaning in ways not previously possible.
